LET’S SAVE ZOEI – Let’s help!

WHO IS LITTLE ZOEI?

Zoei Penullar is a five year old girl who is suffering from a heart disease called CONGENITALLY CORRECTED TRANSPOSITION OF THE GREAT ARTERIES.

WHAT IS CONGENITALLY CORRECTED TRANSPOSITION OF THE GREAT ARTERIES?

According to her mother, Nouella, it was explained to her that:

“Zoei’s condition is called CONGENITALLY CORRECTED TRANSPOSITION OF THE GREAT ARTERIES.

“Instead of her arteries being reversed physically, it is her Left Ventricle (LV) and Right Ventricle (RV) which are reversed.

“It is congenitally corrected because even if these chambers are reversed, both ventricles are doing the supposed function of the other (the LV is functioning as the RV).

“However, since the RV’s normal function is to bring deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs, its muscle structure is not made for pumping blood all over the body, which is now its job in Zoei’s case.

“That is why Zoei’s RV is overworked and the tricuspid valve is weakening, thus the regurgitation.

“So since her RV is the one pumping blood all over the body, this means that blood which is supposed to be distributed is accumulating within her heart, hence its enlargement.”

WHAT DOES ZOEI NEED?

Due to the severity of her heart condition, Zoei needs a pacemaker as soon as possible. But the costs are very steep – operation, medication, hospital bills, etc.

Her first session of the surgery has been successful due to those who offered help to the family and we are hoping for another successful operation.

HOW IS ZOEI NOW?

Zoei was rushed to the hospital in the wee hours of the morning of March 06, 2012. A family friend narrates, “Nahihirapan daw huminga. Nas-stress na heart niya. Dalawa na yung regurgitation ng heart niya. Binago na raw yung dosage ng medicines niya. Whatever plans we have, pwedeng madaliin natin? I’m not a doctor, so I really don’t know what it means, but the mere fact na nahihirapan na yung bata, hindi na maganda yun.”

Orphaned
Kcat Can
By MARIA KATHRINA LOPEZ YARZA
February 20, 2012, 1:26am
MANILA, Philippines — Growing up, I had been misdiagnosed with different disorders and diseases — sebaceous cysts, severe migraine, Bell’s palsy, polio, scoliosis, myasthenia gravis, etc.

It was when I was 22 years old in 2004 when we learned that all my other previous medical conditions were related to one another, and Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) is what my disorder is called.

At that time, I needed an open-head surgery because of the three harmful tumors in my brain. Due of the rarity of my disorder, it took quite a long time before I was properly diagnosed.

NF2 affects 1 out of 25,000 people, and most people would see it as my misfortune. But I see it as a blessing because that prevents 24,999 other people from having it. Having this disorder made me aware not only about NF, but it also became an eye opener for me and for the people around me that there are a lot of other rare diseases that exist all over the world.

Rare Disorders

Did you know that Galactosemia is a disorder that affects how the body processes a simple sugar called galactose? Affected infants typically develop feeding difficulties, a lack of energy (lethargy), a failure to gain weight and grow as expected (failure to thrive), yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice), liver damage, and bleeding. Classic galactosemia occurs in one in 30,000 to 60,000 newborns.

Did you know that Gaucher disease is a chronic, progressive, inherited disorder in which lipids (glucocerebrosides), accumulate within cells and interfere with the normal functioning of various organs like the liver, spleen, lungs, bone marrow, and brain? The incidence of this disease is one in 40,000 to 60,000.

Did you know that Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a rare genetic disorder that is apparent at birth (congenital)? Associated symptoms and findings typically include delays in physical development before and after birth (prenatal and postnatal growth retardation); characteristic abnormalities of the head and facial (craniofacial) area, resulting in a distinctive facial appearance; malformations of the hands and arms (upper limbs); and mild to severe mental retardation. Although the exact incidence is unknown, Cornelia de Lange syndrome likely affects one in 10,000 to 30,000 newborns.

Did you know that Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) or Brittle Bone Disease is a group of genetic disorders that mainly affect the bones? People with this condition have bones that break easily, often from mild trauma or with no apparent cause. Multiple fractures are common, and in severe cases, can occur even before birth. This condition affects an estimated 6 to 7 per 100,000 people worldwide. Types I and IV are the most common forms of osteogenesis imperfecta, affecting four to five per 100,000 people.

Did you know that Hunter syndrome, also known as mucopolysaccharidosis II or MPS II, is caused by an inherited deficiency in the enzyme iduronate-2-sulfatase (or I2S)? Lack of this enzyme affects the body’s ability to break down and recycle cellular waste. Hunter syndrome affects approximately one in every 155,000 people.

More than 7,000 rare diseases affect millions of people and 75 percent of those affected are children. None of these diseases have cure and only five percent have treatments and therapies as remedy.

Here in the Philippines, a rare disease called orphan disorder afflicts no more than one of every 20,000 individual.

Isolated

I learned these facts from Philippine Society for Orphan Disorders, Inc. (PSOD) — a non-profit organization that was organized to continue the efforts of doctors to ensure sustainability of medical and financial support of patients with rare disorders.

Filipino patients born with rare disorders or diseases are mostly “orphaned” by society and suffer from social abandonment because of lack of existing network of support to aid them. Medical help is elusive under the conditions of the country’s health priority. The nature of these illnesses is hardly known due to lack of information and only a few medical professionals, particularly in the country, are aware of these disorders and know how to diagnose and address these conditions.

With the help of the Institute of Human Genetics (IHG) and its partner organizations and donors, PSOD aims to be the central network for the advocacy and effective coordination of all viable efforts to sustain a better equality of life for individuals with orphan or rare disorders in the Philippines.

Rare Disease Week

Presidential Proclamation No. 1989 issued on February 8, 2010 declares the last week of February as ‘National Rare Disease Week’, from February 22 to 29, 2012. World Rare Disease Day will be held on February 29, 2012 with the theme “Solidarity: Rare But Strong Together”

PSOD aims to have a stronger awareness campaign for the general public in 2012 by involving all relevant stakeholders such as government agencies, healthcare institutions, local government units, non-government organizations, the media, and other private and public institutions in the campaign.

The PSOD believes that every person has the right to life even if their disease only affects a small number of people. For more awareness and support, visit: http://www.psod.org.ph

The word rare means “few, not widely known and recurring in distribution”; moreover, rare can also mean “something extraordinary and special”. People with rare diseases may be few, but they are not extinct. They are existent, and are also very special in many ways. They are entitled to the same basic rights and privileges as any normal person does. They are a special breed of God’s wonderful creation.

I am rare. I am as special as you are.

Your prayers please for Baby MARK’s soonest recovery. He is now confined at the UST hospital due to Fever & Asthma. 😦

Mark Angelo Salazar, who will turn two years old next month, has been diagnosed to be suffering from biliary cirrhosis, a disease characterized by progressive inflammation and the destruction of small bile ducts within the liver, eventually leading to organ failure.
His father, Dennis, has been raising funds for the liver transplant doctors have recommended for his son. The cost for the operation has been pegged at P4 million.

According to Dennis, his son’s liver has sustained a lot of damage and he needs to undergo an operation very soon.

“As a parent, I cannot stand seeing my son in this situation. That is why, I see no harm in trying to sell T-shirts online on Facebook at P300 each or distributing coin banks in selected drugstores in Metro Manila to raise money,” he said.

So far, the family has earned P15,000 from the T-shirt sales although admittedly, they still have a long way to go toward reaching their goal.

Dennis’ contact number is 0908-3664383. His wife, Maritess, can be reached at 0921-2955657 while his sister Dona Marie Salazar can be contacted at 0919-8487947.
For those in other countries who want to donate money to the family, Mark Angelo’s Banco de Oro account is 0300886918 with swift code BNORPHMM. They can also deposit their donations in Dona Marie’s Bank of the Philippine Islands account (account number 0019195856).

Cadayunan Primary School: CDO Bloggers Outreach Project (a little help or big help :-)

original link

Our group, Cagayan de Oro Bloggers (CDOBloggers), will have an outreach and feeding program to a newly opened public primary school in Besigan, which is 52 kilometers away from the city proper and most of the people in the area are farmers with no regular transportation except dump trucks provided by the city government to help the people transport their farm products.

Before Cadayunan Primary School was approved last March 2011, the students had to walk 12 kilometers everyday, to and from the nearest school and this resulted to in-attendance. Most of them skipping school and eventually stopping before the school year would end. Cadayunan Primary School allows residents of Besigan to have access to primary education. Currently the school has 60-80 primary pupils and 2 teachers. But since they have just started operating in July of this year, the school is in dire need of learning materials for the pupils as well as teaching materials for the teacher to effectively guide and teach these eager kids. Each of the members of Cagayan de Oro Bloggers have already committed to help through cash and in-kind donations. We are looking into donating books and other materials that may be beneficial to the learning process of the pupils. Surely all the contributions will go a long way. This would be a wonderful early Christmas gift for them too.

CDObloggers‘ objective is to donate books and other supplementary learning materials and conduct a feeding activity there on December 2, 2011. CDOBloggers members has pledged a Php 300.00 contribution each which would be for the books and materials (Php250) and Php 50 for the feeding activity.

We would like to appeal to every kindhearted Kagay-anon, or anyone for that matter, for any support you can contribute. Please email us at cdobloggersinc@gmail.com if you wish to help or take part of this outreach. And to our fellow bloggers and netizens we also accept donations through paypal (francis.siason@gmail.com). Your $3 to $5 will surely go a long way. The last time we did a project like this (involving money donations through paypal or cash) was way back January 2009 when majority area of CDO was heavily flooded due to over spilling of water to major rivers in the city. We also made a post about the project (The $3 Campaign for the Flash Flood Victims).

You could also opt to donate in kind school materials like books, notebooks, writing and coloring materials, etc. As well as food and drinks for the feeding program. Deadline of contributions is on November 30, 2011.

The CDOBloggers are appealing for our support in this advocacy. If you wish to help or take part of this, you may emaill: cdobloggersinc@gmail.com. They are also accepting Paypal donations at: francis.siason@gmail.com. Whatever you may contribute, it will surely go a long way. This would also be a wonderful early Christmas gift for them too.

Read. Enjoy. Love. Help.
Hello! Here’s a Christmas gift idea for you to give to Young Adults and book lovers.

Just Like Harry Potter, Twilight, and such, The Seven is targeted for Young Adult readers, as well as the kids at heart and book lovers. Though it doesn’t really matter how old you are, if you like to read, you’ll definitely love this book.

Another reason why I recommend you, especially the youth, to read this because aside from the beautiful magical story, there is also depth in the story. It has a lot of valuable lessons and morals even if it’s the work of fiction.

Here’s a copy of my column/article about this book:

There’s truth in fantasy
By MARIA KATHRINA LOPEZ YARZA
November 7, 2011

MANILA, Philippines — Credence is to believe and to trust the truth about something. It is that on which our faith lies.

I am not really an avid reader of fantasy books, but once I start reading one, I always feel like I am being transported into a world of make-believe, mesmerized, and never letting go of the book until I finish reading it down to the last page.

It was fun reading “The Seven: The Key of Credence,’’ a book that made me feel like a teenager again. I can definitely relate to the youthful curiosity and love of adventure of the main character Ryan Trish and her friends.

The Key of Credence tells us about Ryan and her friends and their experience in an entirely new world — one that involves the Heavens and the Helles. Reading it, I am transported to Sactae Mundus and Intero Regnum, two of the fictional places in the book. The places are so beautifully described that I see the vivid imagery in my mind.

From among the many conversations in the story, two have touched my heart.

The first one speaks of finding courage and hope from unexpected people and unexpected places. For example:

“It’s pretty childish I know, but because of that I never lose my courage to face whatever comes my way. It’s like… I always anticipate someone… something to support me whenever I needed it. And guess what, the imaginary assistance I need never fails to back me up on the verge of giving up.”

“Imaginary?” Ryan asked skeptically, one eyebrow raised, “Like imaginary friends?” “I mean like , when I least expect it, a friend, a relative, and even a complete stranger would miraculously appear and lend their hand to whatever difficulties I was going through. It was like someone told them, pushed them to help me.”

The other one speaks of friendship, loyalty, and faith – faith in oneself, faith in others, and faith in God above all things…

“You must understand that the most important thing apart from religion is your faith Trish, your faith in Him. And when you believe, you would follow what He had said. And that is to spread love around you. If you did just that, what possibility for any of you to not be saved then, when the time of judgment comes?”

WRITTEN BY A FILIPINO

This book was written by a full-blooded Filipino, Veronica Mist, proving that Filipinos can also create wonderful fantasy stories, similar to Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Twilight and so on. Book publisher Josephine Litonjua of Ishin Dream Publishing said: “I wanted to show the world that Filipinos are equally or maybe more than talented than writers abroad.”

I am likewise proud of Veronica Mist. She is a close friend of my best friend Ysiad in high school. Upon learning that Veronica wrote a fantasy book, memories of some 13 years ago flashed back when Ysiad would tell me that she had a friend who loved to write stories about the paranormal, the supernatural, her own fantasy world. That friend turned out to be Veronica Mist, now a published author.

To the beautiful and magical story, Veronica also added a twist of war in the human soul, about the end of the world, and also of God’s unwavering love, incorporating moral lessons in the story that will surely touch the heart and soul of the reader.

“Maybe I’m just too ambitious, but still I want to teach today’s younger generation, especially teenagers who have been losing their morals, respect and dignity because of the environment they’ve grown into.” Veronica shares.

“The Seven: The Key of Credence by Veronica Mist” is available at Powerbooks and National Bookstore. You may also purchase it from me for the same price where part of the proceeds will go to my medical funds. Veronica Mist and Isshin Dream Publishing are willing to give me a certain percentage from the sales of the book I get to sell. Not only will they be able to reach more booklovers to read the book, moreover, they will have reached my heart with their helping hands. You can purchase the book by visiting my website or contact me at 0906-3360757.

“Do not be afraid. Because if you let these fears consume you, you’ll most likely fail even before everything else starts.”

You may place your order/s HERE or contact me at 09063360757.

Thank you so much! Take care and God bless us!

Pamasko sa ating mga kababayang OFW “Distressed sa disyerto” – Help & Share

original link

Christmas is just around the corner…Some of us have almost finished on our Christmas list…Some cargo boxes are already sealed and ready to be shipped to loved ones anytime…Some of us had already plan for “the event” – Christmas parties, family reunions, and others already booked for vacation But Christmas is more than those –

It’s about sharing our blessings to the needy; It’s about giving love to our fellow to the best way we can; It’s about reaching out people and letting them feel that someone care and love them. This Christmas, let our distressed OFW “kababayans” feel our warmth love and care to them…

Share our blessings in any forms.Express our love by reaching out to them.
Once more, I am humbly knocking on your good heart to be with me in cooperation with SFC Qatar Social Ministry in reaching our distressed OFW kababayans who are now under the custody of OWWA. By sharing our blessings through giving we will be able to reach out people and let them feel the true spirit of Christmas.

I already started receiving some stuffs such as used clothes. As of now, we have 80 women kababayans who are under the custody of OWWA, who needs our help, support and love to fight their battle against abuse, trauma and threats they experienced from their employer.

Most of the things they needs are toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, sanitary napkins, towel, etc.). Any donations, in kind or in cash will be accepted. Small things to us are big help for them. This Christmas Season let us put smiles to their face and warmth their heart with love.

If you have anything that you want to hand with them – donations or pledges (in cash or in kind), kindly approach me or to whom you get this email. Rest assured that all your gifts will be given to them.

Share your blessings….Give Love…Reach Out….And be a part of the gift giving to be held onDecember 8, 2011 at POLO/ OWWA Ground, Doha Qatar
It’s not how much you give but the love you put into giving.
