janine

My name is Johanna Tejada-Medalla and I am a mother of two young boys and daughter named Jorge Rafael, Julian Hanns and Janine Marie Victoria. We are living in my parent’s house at 40 Kennedy Drive Tandang Sora Quezon City 1116, Philippines.

I wrote this letter to ask for your support to our only daughter Janine Marie Victoria. My daughter Janine was born with a life threatening disease called “Biliary Atresia” . It is a congenital condition characterize by the absence or closure of the bile ducts that drain bile from the liver. Biliary Atresia is a progressive inflammatory process that begins very soon after birth. In Janine’s case, she was diagnosed initially with Neonatal Hepatitis at 2 1/2 months and after two weeks of medication nothing changes with her color and stool that make her paediatrician decided to have another biopsy, eventually it turned out to be Biliary Atresia. During that time, there was already a significant amount of damage to her liver. White blood cells invaded the ducts, which became damaged or closed completely, bile was then trapped inside the liver and rapidly caused liver cirrhosis.

Janine video link

An operation called “KASAI Method” was done on Janine by Dra. Esther Saguil at the Philippine General Hospital last April 14, 2009. It is an operation that removes the damaged biliary ducts ouside the liver. Then, the small intestine is directly attached to the liver at the spot where bile is found or expected to drain. This procedure is not a cure but rather a temporary solution to be able to give Janine more time to find the necessary funding for her operation and the matching liver type. Unfortunately, although the operation was done, her liver continued to fail. Our doctors told us that there is no other course but to have a liver transplant.

Unfortunately, liver transplant is not yet available locally but it can be done in Taiwan for P3 Million pesos (approx. $60,000 USD). This amount is simply beyond the means of our family. If my daughter will not be able to have a liver transplant soon, she will die. All we want is to see our daughter live that’s why we are appealing for you charity and compassion.

We are entrusting Janine to God’s hand and we believe that He will deliver Janine from this ordeal, through your help and prayers. Thank you for your time in reading my letter and we are hoping for your kind help. God Bless.

HELP COYCOY

a repost from Definitely Filipino with the message of Khessa Balabag

I received a message from Khessa Balabag- here it is:
HELP ME HELP COYCOY

coycoy

Many of us often complain about minor
difficulties in life. A little criticism makes us angry. A little
discomfort thrusts down our spirits. A little problem depresses us. I
am oftentimes guilty of these but when I ponder upon the struggle of a
little boy named Coycoy, I still feel very lucky.

Coycoy is 7
years old. He is the son of one of Kuya Gil Mapa – one of the guys at
our office who do electrical pieceworks. Coycoy is the only boy in the
three siblings. It has been a year since he was diagnosed of leukemia
or cancer of the blood. Since then, Kuya Gil and his wife, Maribel,
have been in and out of the Davao Medical Center in Davao City,
transferring every now and then from the Oncology Department to the
House of Hope which shelters cancer kid patients.

Coycoy has
been undergoing chemotherapy sessions. His fragile body is slowly
becoming weak. Kuya Gil and his wife have been doing their best to save
Coycoy, exhausting all their resources to pay for his medication and
their daily sustenance in the hospital. Kuya Gil is in Digos City,
Davao del Sur, from Mondays thru Saturdays to be able to work and earn
whatever little he can just for his family. His wife is the one with
Coycoy in the hospital to give him the love and support of a mother.
Coycoy’s sister also stopped school to assist her mother in taking care
of him.

The family has already sought help from friends,
co-workers, and government agencies but these are still not enough to
make both ends meet. As I’d observe, every time Kuya Gil is faced with
difficulty, especially in their finances, he starts to lose hope. It is
Coycoy who gives him strength because of the child’s strong will to
survive and to better his health. One time, Coycoy told his father that
he wants to have a normal life like any other kids and to live until he
grows older. He also said that he wants to be somebody someday so he
can help his family. Coycoy’s enthusiasm to live is what makes his
father firm in believing that one day Coycoy will be free from his
suffering.

Last September 30, 2009, Coycoy was brought to the
ICU because of the need to closely monitor him as the infection already
reached his lungs which caused him to have chills and a persistent
fever. We thought it was the end of our fight because Kuya Gil was
already thanking people who helped in his text message. He related how
Coycoy was having a hard time breathing and that he might not survive.
But prayer power cannot indeed be underestimated because even if I did
not text back for not knowing what to say, after worrying and praying
for Coycoy for all those times that I kept mum about him, on October 9,
Kuya Gil told me the good news that Coycoy is already safe and okay.
Coycoy is now back in the comforts of their home and was even able to
make a thank you video message for everyone.

Their family’s
struggle becomes an inspiration to me and a group of friends from work
who help pool in resources for Coycoy. Coycoy is our constant reminder
to appreciate life and to trust in God’s plans. We believe that one of
the reasons why all these happened to the family of Coycoy is for us to
reflect on his plight, to become a blessing to those who are in need,
especially like the family of Coycoy. As of this date, we have gathered
approximately PhP 94,263.94. The Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative,
Inc. (DASURECO) employees’ contribution through cash and leave credit
conversions comprised the major bulk of help extended. I also have a
few friends from college (the University of the Philippines in
Mindanao) also helping, like Macky Pamintuan and his wife who donated a
huge amount, and also Rochie Rodis-Jocson who included Coycoy’s story
in her Leukemia and Lymphoma Society San Diego/Hawaii Chapter
Fundraising campaign.

We are continually seeking help for
Coycoy’s continuous medication. We are reaching to your kindest heart
and hoping that you would help. Coycoy’s battle for cancer is our
battle too. We cannot lose hope nor just give in to a threat on the
life of a little child who is determined to live. For those who wish to
share a few of their blessings, I’m including below Kuya Gil’s bank
account and cellphone numbers. You may also message me through facebook
for any queries.

Account Name: Gil P. Mapa
Bank Name: One Network Bank – Digos City Branch (a local bank)
Account No. 580-25-651

Gil Mapa’s cellphone no. +63909-866-1744 +63909-866-1744

More
important is our need for your prayers. We sincerely thank everyone who
listened to Coycoy’s story. The outpouring of help from you makes
Coycoy and his family hold on tight to that glint of hope that Coycoy
will someday be healed. May God bless us all!

from Jose Miguel Rivera

With a sad heart, I’d like to inform everyone that Edna already passed away. She left us last Friday at around 9:20pm. Thank you for all the love that you have given her. At least, during her last remaining days, she really felt that people loved and cared for her. To the donors, thank you so much for all your help. Please still continue praying for her and her family. I know Edna is in a better place now.

Dearest family and friends…

There comes a time that we just know and believe that its time to LET GO and LET GOD, no matter how painful it may be… Iggy’s moving to a new home makes us both happy and sad at the same time…sad as we will not be able to physically see him graduate from college, have a family, have little iggy’s run around, watch him make 3 point shots, hug him, kiss him and do all the other things and share events as a family should. HAPPY because we know that he is finally HOME where there is no more pain, suffering, uncertainties, worries and that he is in heaven where there is everlasting peace and happiness

Let us remember Iggy as number 9, it was his basketball jersey number…he was born in the year 1989…the letter I for IAN is the 9th letter in the alphabet… he died at 9:19 AM in the year 2009…he was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 19 years old…he survived for 9 months…9 months of preparation for eternal life…We know our beloved Iggy is happy and at peace…

We would like to THANK YOU ALL for being part of Iggy’s cycle of life…short as it may be 20 years was full of meaning, it HAD a PURPOSE. We know that one way or another Iggy was meant to be shared with all of you. Iggy was not only our son, but yours…he was not only Bea, Matt and Nico’s big brother, but yours…he was not only a grandson to his grandparents, but yours…he was not only a nephew to our brothers, sisters, cousins, but yours…he was not only a cousin to relatives, but yours…he was not only a friend to a few, but to a whole lot more…
Iggy’s life was a miracle…let us all believe in miracles…Iggy taught all of us the true meaning of life… unconditional love, compassion, humility, generosity, perseverance, unity, power of prayer, empathy, courage, acceptance, caring for others, selflessness, being the best and unwavering faith in GOD.

This page is too small to print out all of the family, relatives, best friends, USLS-IS batch 2007, La Salle Manila community, Baguio community, regional community, international community, friends, acquaintances (who eventually became friends), government officials, government and non-government agencies, doctors, nurses, medical staff and the media who inspired IGGY to keep fighting up to the very end…again THANK YOU for the prayers, encouragement, moral support, financial support, medical support, presence, friendship, comforting words, gifts, but most importantly the unconditional love you have given our dear Iggy and our family. We may not be able to repay you in this lifetime, but GOD knows…

May we also take this opportunity to ask you to continue to support IGGY’s FUND: iCANCERvive. We have decided together with USLS-IS Batch 2007 to make this as Iggy’s legacy. It aims to help other cancer patients, as we know it was his wish as well.

GOD BLESS US ALL…

farewell Iggy………..update i got this from my mail…Iggy’s Gone….

but his family is appealing to us for a little help again

from: Lynn Goldfinger Oktubre 18 nang 10:23 PM Sumagot sa kanyang mensahe

Following up on Cynthia’s email about collecting a last round of donation for the Villanuevas – for those of you based in the US and willing to donate $10 but may find it cumbersome to do a Paypal or bank transfer- I can collect your checks (making sure to account for and publish everything I receive) and send a one time payment via Paypal.
Send me a note and I will respond with my contact information.
Thanks.

From Cynthia Dayco:

I just came from the hospital. Iggy’s parents are putting up a brave and cheerful front, and the twins are dealing with Iggy’s passing in their own fashion.

As you know, the money that we raised has already been spent (a huge chunk went to bone marrow that will no longer be of use to anyone). I learned that the Villanuevas still owe the hospital PhP1.5 million (US$32,147). That excludes professional fees for the doctors.

I’d like to ask everyone of the 3,000-plus Iggy’s Friends to rally one more time. Let’s pass the hat and chip in Php500 (US$10/AU$11.68) each. If we all chip in, we will raise enough to cover the hospital bills.

You can send by any of three ways:

PayPal – pay to vivien_villanueva@yahoo.com
Bank deposit –

VIVIEN SHERYL P. VILLANUEVA
S/A # 0670 355 593
BANCO DE ORO SM NORTHN EDSA B (note B as there are branches A & C too)
QUEZON CITY

Or if you plan to attend the wake (details are still undetermined), give it Jude or Beng yourselves.

It’s just P500. That’s one week of Starbucks coffee. Or one Frday night’s bar tab. Or two sessions of mani/pedi. It isn’t much, but if we ALL give, it we can help Iggy’s family piece their lives back together.

Thanks.
Cynthia

update for iggy’s condition….

Cynthia Dayco sent a message to the members of Iggy’s Friends.

——————–
Subject: Not so good news, we’re afraid

Iggy makes an unexpected turn for the worse,: lung, kidney and gastro intestinal problems among others.

Doctors and Beng are still mulling the use of this drug that will cost PHP2.4 million, which will wipe out the balance of our funds. We’ll have to renew our vigor in raising funds for Iggy’s medical care and transplant.

If you believe in God and in prayer, now’s the time to ask Him for a big, big favor.

Mukha
By Lenggai
Meet Jackie. 5 years old.

mukha01

Taga-Camarines Norte.

mukha03

At mag-shoot ulit.

Sana lang, mabigyan ko ng hustisya ang kuwento nina Jackie at Emma.

Sana lang, mabigyan ko ng boses ang kanilang magagandang pangarap.
