Hm.. so, how are we doing so far? Are we okay? Ok!

Balik muna tayo sa Biology at Physics.

Sa Biology, Evolution selects those organisms that can better adapt to their natural environment. On the other hand, sa Physics naman, the equation is reversed. It is now the environment that is forced to adapt to the organism.

Maaring two million years ago, may dalawang Homo na nagkagalit, may pumulot ng bato at pinukol sa kalaban, tumba! Waw, ok itong bato ah!

But the Great Leap in Physics, some say the greatest achievement of humans, happened half a million years ago. Would you happen to know kung ano yun? That’s right, c’mon baby light my Fire!

And because of Fire, more courses were offered in UP. University of Prehistory. AB Pottery, BS Metallurgy, Masteral Degree in Slash and Burn. Of course, huwag nating kalimutan ang Humanities at saka PE at saka Military Science.

And so, with the advent of Physics, a second stage of evolution is set in motion. You don’t need to evolve better eyes and larger ears, ang kailangan mo lang ay night vision optics and noise-cancelling headphones.

And the moral of the story?

Tahiin natin so far. Convenience requires Physics, Physics creates Surplus, Surplus evolves Economics. But Economics is not happy with mere convenience; it wants more convenience, and luxury. More luxury, more physics, more surplus, more economics. But more is not enough. It is never enough. So, more and more luxury, more and more physics, more and more and more surplus, until the carrying capacity of natural biology, or the ecosystem, is breached.

But Economics still doesn’t stop. Why, because old habits die hard. Capitalist or Socialist, everybody believes that Physics will find a way and save the day.

Ano ang alternative kamo? Very obvious actually. Same logic, but less luxury, less physics, less surplus, less toll on the ecosystem. Which also begs the question How much is enough?

At dito tayo nagkakalituhan minsan. Totoo yun, but it misses the point. Bakit? Because it gives the impression na walang hangganan ang yaman ng daigdig. Which is not true.

What is true, however, is Fact Number Two: Napakalaking resources and winawaldas ng mga tao sa mga produktong hindi kapaki-pakinabang at nakapipinsala pa sa karamihan.

Dagdagan mo ng corruption, consumerism and wasteful lifestyles – and the grand total equals the huge disparity between the very rich and the very poor. And there’s your math. Wrong priorities + wrong sharing + wrongdoing = very wrong picture. How wrong?

Pero kung angkop lang sana ang ating mga priorities sa mga pangunahing pangangailangan, at more or less pantay-pantay ang hatian, at walang magmamay-aring uring nangingibabaw, then even with the limited resources of our abundant planet, there is more than enough for everyone. There is a trite saying that says it well: The Earth is more than sufficient for everyone’s need, but not a bit enough for anyone’s greed.

At dahil totoong
Thank you for your time. ~~
