Read. Enjoy. Love. Help.
Hello! Here’s a Christmas gift idea for you to give to Young Adults and book lovers.

Just Like Harry Potter, Twilight, and such, The Seven is targeted for Young Adult readers, as well as the kids at heart and book lovers. Though it doesn’t really matter how old you are, if you like to read, you’ll definitely love this book.

Another reason why I recommend you, especially the youth, to read this because aside from the beautiful magical story, there is also depth in the story. It has a lot of valuable lessons and morals even if it’s the work of fiction.

Here’s a copy of my column/article about this book:

There’s truth in fantasy
By MARIA KATHRINA LOPEZ YARZA
November 7, 2011

MANILA, Philippines — Credence is to believe and to trust the truth about something. It is that on which our faith lies.

I am not really an avid reader of fantasy books, but once I start reading one, I always feel like I am being transported into a world of make-believe, mesmerized, and never letting go of the book until I finish reading it down to the last page.

It was fun reading “The Seven: The Key of Credence,’’ a book that made me feel like a teenager again. I can definitely relate to the youthful curiosity and love of adventure of the main character Ryan Trish and her friends.

The Key of Credence tells us about Ryan and her friends and their experience in an entirely new world — one that involves the Heavens and the Helles. Reading it, I am transported to Sactae Mundus and Intero Regnum, two of the fictional places in the book. The places are so beautifully described that I see the vivid imagery in my mind.

From among the many conversations in the story, two have touched my heart.

The first one speaks of finding courage and hope from unexpected people and unexpected places. For example:

“It’s pretty childish I know, but because of that I never lose my courage to face whatever comes my way. It’s like… I always anticipate someone… something to support me whenever I needed it. And guess what, the imaginary assistance I need never fails to back me up on the verge of giving up.”

“Imaginary?” Ryan asked skeptically, one eyebrow raised, “Like imaginary friends?” “I mean like , when I least expect it, a friend, a relative, and even a complete stranger would miraculously appear and lend their hand to whatever difficulties I was going through. It was like someone told them, pushed them to help me.”

The other one speaks of friendship, loyalty, and faith – faith in oneself, faith in others, and faith in God above all things…

“You must understand that the most important thing apart from religion is your faith Trish, your faith in Him. And when you believe, you would follow what He had said. And that is to spread love around you. If you did just that, what possibility for any of you to not be saved then, when the time of judgment comes?”

WRITTEN BY A FILIPINO

This book was written by a full-blooded Filipino, Veronica Mist, proving that Filipinos can also create wonderful fantasy stories, similar to Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Twilight and so on. Book publisher Josephine Litonjua of Ishin Dream Publishing said: “I wanted to show the world that Filipinos are equally or maybe more than talented than writers abroad.”

I am likewise proud of Veronica Mist. She is a close friend of my best friend Ysiad in high school. Upon learning that Veronica wrote a fantasy book, memories of some 13 years ago flashed back when Ysiad would tell me that she had a friend who loved to write stories about the paranormal, the supernatural, her own fantasy world. That friend turned out to be Veronica Mist, now a published author.

To the beautiful and magical story, Veronica also added a twist of war in the human soul, about the end of the world, and also of God’s unwavering love, incorporating moral lessons in the story that will surely touch the heart and soul of the reader.

“Maybe I’m just too ambitious, but still I want to teach today’s younger generation, especially teenagers who have been losing their morals, respect and dignity because of the environment they’ve grown into.” Veronica shares.

“The Seven: The Key of Credence by Veronica Mist” is available at Powerbooks and National Bookstore. You may also purchase it from me for the same price where part of the proceeds will go to my medical funds. Veronica Mist and Isshin Dream Publishing are willing to give me a certain percentage from the sales of the book I get to sell. Not only will they be able to reach more booklovers to read the book, moreover, they will have reached my heart with their helping hands. You can purchase the book by visiting my website or contact me at 0906-3360757.

“Do not be afraid. Because if you let these fears consume you, you’ll most likely fail even before everything else starts.”

You may place your order/s HERE or contact me at 09063360757.

Thank you so much! Take care and God bless us!

Bakit maraming mayroong kanser sa ating panahon?

Food Inc.

TANONG:

Hot dogs: The Cancer Prevention Coalition recommends that children should not eat more than 12 hot dogs per month because of the risk of cancer. If you must have your hot dog fix, look for those without sodium nitrite listed among the ingredients.

Processed meats and bacon: These meats almost always contain the same sodium nitrite found in hot dogs. You can find some without nitrites, but you’ll have to look for them in natural grocers or health food stores. Bacon is also high in saturated fat, which contributes to the risk of cancers, including breast cancer. Limiting your consumption of processed meats and saturated fats also benefits the heart.

Doughnuts: Doughnuts contain hydrogenated oils, white flour, sugar, and acrylamides. Essentially, they’re one of the worst cancer foods you can possibly eat. Reader’s Digest calls doughnuts “disastrous” as a breakfast food, and many experts agree it’s probably one of the worst ways to start the day.

French fries: Fries are made with hydrogenated oil and fried at high temperatures. Some chains even add sugar to their fry recipe to make them even more irresistible. Not only do they clog your arteries with saturated fat and trans fat, they also contain acrylamides. They should be called “cancer fries,” not French fries.

Chips / crackers / cookies: These generally contain white flour and sugar as well as trans fats, but it’s not enough to simply look for these ingredients on the label; you have to actually “decode” the ingredients list that food manufacturers use to deceive consumers. They do this by hiding ingredients (such as hiding MSG in yeast extract, or by fiddling with serving sizes so they can claim the food is trans fat free, even when it contains trans fats (the new Girl Scout cookies use this trick)

High-fructose corn syrup

(NaturalNews) Corn sugar? It’s high-fructose corn syrup by any other name, and it’s dangerous. What sweeteners are safe? What’s not? You may be surprised at the latest research.

Last September, manufacturers of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) asked the federal government for permission to sweeten its image with a new name: “corn sugar.” Their TV ads say, “Your body can’t tell the difference between corn sugar and cane sugar.” A popular website, Sweet Scam (http://sweetscam.com/), purports to clear up the confusion, while condemning “activist groups like the Weston A. Price Foundation, Joseph Mercola, and the Naturopathy Movement, which have perpetuated unfounded myths about sweeteners [and] completely ignore the scientific and nutritional evidence to backup [sic] their outlandish claims.”

What is Aspartame?

Formaldehyde Poisoning from Aspartame

Aspartame ( Nutrasweet )

In 1997 there was an increase in aspartame users reporting severe toxicity reactions and damage such as seizures, eye damage and vision loss, confusion, severe migraines, tremors, depression, anxiety attacks, insomnia, etc. In the same years, Ralph Walton, MD, Chairman, The Center for Behavioral Medicine showed that the only studies which didn’t find problems with aspartame where those funded by the manufacturer (Monsanto). Given the agreement amongst independent scientists about the toxicity of aspartame, the only question was whether the formaldehyde exposure from aspartame caused the toxicity. That question has now been largely answered because of research in the late 1990s.

The following facts shown by recent scientific research: 1. Aspartame (nutrasweet) breaks down into methanol (wood alcohol). 2. Methanol quickly converts to formadehyde in the body. 3. Formaldehyde causes gradual and eventually severe damage to the neurological system, immune system and causes permanent genetic damage at extremely low doses. 4. Methanol from alcoholic beverages and from fruit and juices does not convert to formaldehyde and cause damage because there are protective chemicals in these traditionally ingested beverages. 5. The most recent independent research in Europe demonstrates that ingestion of small amounts of aspartame leads to the accumulation of significant levels of formaldehyde (bound to protein) in organs (liver, kidneys, brain) and tissues. 6. Excitotoxic amino acids such as the one which is immediately released from aspartame likely increases the damage caused by the formaldehyde.

(NaturalNews) In response to growing awareness about the dangers of artificial sweeteners, what does the manufacturer of one of the world’s most notable artificial sweeteners do? Why, rename it and begin marketing it as natural, of course. This is precisely the strategy of Ajinomoto, maker of aspartame, which hopes to pull the wool over the eyes of the public with its rebranded version of aspartame, called “AminoSweet”.

Aspartame has been renamed and is now being marketed as a natural sweetener

Artificial Sweeteners. The link: Calorie watchers scored a win when diet sodas were introduced in the early 1950s. Then lab studies suggested that the sweetener cyclamate caused bladder cancer in rats, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned its use. Then saccharin, the replacement of choice, was also shown to cause tumors in rats. Although saccharin was never banned, all products containing the sweetener were required to carry a cancer warning on their packaging.

So, what is an excitotoxin?

These are substances, usually amino acids, that react with specialized receptors in the brain in such a way as to lead to destruction of certain types of brain cells.

An enormous amount of both clinical and experimental evidence has accumulated over the past decade supporting this basic premise. Yet, the FDA still refuses to recognize the immediate and long term danger to the public caused by the practice of allowing various excitotoxins to be added to the food supply, such as MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, and aspartame (NutraSweet and Equal — the blue packets).

Has the FDA repeated the aspartame approval process for sucralose, allowing a product with proven carcinogens to flood our food supply? Only time will tell, as it has with aspartame. Yet at the cost of human lives.

Aspartame, the main ingredient in Equal and NutraSweet. Almost all of the independent research into aspartame found dangerous side effects in rodents. The FDA chose not to take these findings into account when it approved aspartame for public use. Over the course of 15 years, those same side effects increasingly appeared in humans. Not in everyone, of course — but in those who were vulnerable to the chemical structure of aspartame.

Aspartame consumption strongly associated with migraines and seizures (Most all people they found that get migraines have low magnesium)

the phenylalanine in aspartame could conceiveably mediate neurologic effects. If mice are given aspartame in doses that elevate plasma phenylalanine levels more than those of tyrosine (which probably occurs after any aspartame dose in humans), the frequency of seizures following the administration of an epileptogenic drug, pentylenetetrazole, is enhanced. This effect is simulated by equimolar phenylalanine and blocked by concurrent administration of valine, which blocks phenylalanine’s entry into the brain. Aspartame also potentiates the induction of seizures by inhaled fluorothyl or by electroconvulsive shock. Perhaps regulations concerning the sale of food additives should be modified to require the reporting of adverse reactions and the continuing conduct of mandated safety research.

75% of complaints to the FDA is From Aspartame.

The Dangers of MSG

In this eye-opening interview, you’ll learn:
How MSG and aspartame are related to cancer, obesity, neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolic disorders.
How food companies hide MSG on food labels by using a “secret code” of innocent-sounding ingredients.
Why kids eating Splenda may end up with suppressed immune systems.
How the manufacturers of artificial sweeteners enforce scientific censorship on the dangers of their products.
The real reason why the American Diabetes Association won’t speak out against aspartame.
Why yeast extract is more dangerous than monosodium glutamate.
The hidden link between soy and dementia.
Why many foods labeled “all natural” aren’t healthy — or natural!
How you can slow MSG and glutamate absorption using nutrients and herbs.
How aspartame both causes and accelerates cancer.
Why the pharmaceutical industry needs MSG to help create more patients.

After the non-stop surgeries, therapies and medications, my battle with NF2 continues and I won’t stop raising money to sustain my medical needs.

This October, I need to have my regular cranial CT scan to monitor my tumors. And also, I’ll be having my MRI of the spine to check if there are tumors on my spinal column that’s causing my immobility.

Both tests would cost us more or less P35,000. (The MRI of the spine costs P24K) We are not really short of money since I still have my savings, but still we can’t let that savings be drained because we’ll never know when I’ll be needing it. Besides, that is where we get the money for my maintenance medicines like anti-seizure, antibiotic for my eyes, etc.

I also hope and wish and pray that the minor surgery that I badly wanted would finally push through in order to remove the tumor/schwanomma/bukol on my right foot. It’s just a small mass, but it is really SMALL BUT TERRIBLE! Because the pain is so terrible every time it bump on to something or when I accidentally stomp my foot a bit hard. Super ouch!!! (times 10! Haha) And I don’t want it to grow bigger anymore. Before, it’s the same size as a monggo seed and it already was hurting. Now it’s the same size as a green peas or ponkan seed (hear goes my food analogy again.. haha) and it hurts even more. :-/ I also hope that my mom could already find and hire a househelp since it’s just the 2 of us here in the house most of the time since my siblings goes to shool and my dad is at work. My mom is also sick and she still takes care of me. Although I can manage to do some things on my own, she still has to do the household chores. What more if I’ll have that foot surgery? It would cost another 20-30 thousand, but not now.

And I also want my mom to get better so I always tell her that she could get some money in my savings for her medications. Though most of the time, tinitipid niya pa rin ang sarili niya since her medicines are sooooo expensive. So she’s still frugal on her self even though she really needs it because she’s afraid she might use a lot from my medical funds.

There’s so many things that I wish, hope & pray for and I know that with my faith and your help, it is definitely possible! …one at a time. For now, CT Scan and MRI for me.

So I am again asking for your continues support in my fund drive.

Wanted: Pen, paper, musical instruments by Kcat Yarza

MANILA, Philippines — etting an education prepares us physically, emotionally, mentally and socially to survive challenges in the real, big world out there while trying to accomplish our dreams. Even President Obama said, “Through education, we learn how to learn.”

I am forever grateful to my parents for giving me a good quality education. I might not have excelled in academics but the values that I learned in school really come in handy in my life’s journey.

While most claim that private school education is better than public schooling, it is still up to the student if he or she wants to excel and make use of every educational learning device and material to augment his knowledge.

ELPIDIO SINGCO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

This school is located on a land donated by the kindhearted Singco family. It was built by the residents of the community by putting together their meager resources so that their children could go to school.

Ernesto Ganado or Tito Bong is an OFW working in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His family owns a farm in his hometown in North Cotabato and most of his workers’ children study at the nearby Elpidio Singco National High School.

One of Tito Bong’s dreams is to help these children in his town to finish schooling in a good school environment — without leaky roofs, un-cemented floors, and collapsing walls. The school building is made from sawali and nipa so much so that when heavy rains come pouring down, the teachers and the students all have to deal with the leaks and the muddy floors.

But this miserable condition did not deter the teachers from teaching and the students from studying. The students continue with their dreams to finish their education and to move on to find success in their lives.

Tito Bong shares, “A student who is willing to learn will survive at all costs despite the hardships and obstacles that come by.”

By next school year, a new classroom will have to be built for the incoming third year high school students. We can help in the reconstruction of the school and in the fulfillment of their dreams by connecting with Tito Bong at 09167564027 or ebongganado@gmail.com for inquiries and donations.

PENS & PAPERS FOR A CAUSE

When Jade Samson and her family were living in Singapore several years ago, she joined a group that collected used household items and gave them to whoever needed them. She met some people who donated school supplies instead; and so she thought, these school supplies would be a big help to the kids in the local elementary school in her town in Narra, Palawan. So every time she collected a box of school items, she sent it to Estrella Village Elementary School, and made all the students, teachers, and parents so happy and thankful.

Now that Jade and her family are back in their hometown, they still help the students in their little way, providing yearly incentive to the graduating class valedictorian in order to encourage more students to study harder.

The son of Jade is turning one year old this December, and to make it more special, she thought of doing something extra nice for the kids of the school again by giving gifts and supplies to the 186 elementary students of the school. Thus, Paper and Pencils For a Cause was born.

We can help support this project by donating paper, pens, crayons and other school supplies, or unwanted but still usable schoolbags and other school materials. In this way, we will not only be helping the children, but we can also help our planet Earth by not throwing as trash but passing on to others the usable and recyclable stuffs that we do not need anymore. For your donations (in goods and in kind), contact jade.samson@ymail.com

WANTED: BIG HEARTS

A few days ago, Joanne Gonzales, one of my friends from Bukidnon, shared that a fire transpired in their town school, the Pangantucan Central Elementary School. Although the fire department responded quickly, they were not able to save the building because it was made of wood and light materials. All classrooms were razed down to the ground.

DepEd, together with the local government, and other government agencies are now doing their part in prioritizing the rebuilding of the school.

As part of the community, Joanne and her townmates are currently seeking finances to buy band instruments for the students’ use because all their band instruments that were kept inside the school were destroyed in the fire as well.

Their town fiesta is fast approaching, and the students are worried that they do not have any musical instruments. It gives joy to these kids to be able to play music in order to give joy to their town mates during events like this.

Let us help them in raising money to buy lyres and drums. Let us put smiles to these children’s faces while playing music for the town. You may get in touch with Joanne Gonzales at charming_anne106@yahoo.com for your donations.

Each child who is willing to learn and to be taught deserves not only the right to be schooled, but also to be provided with the necessary educational tools that they need, and to study in an environment conducive to learning as well. We have been given that chance to be properly educated, it is their turn to receive the privilege and the blessing.
